Yoga: A Fashionable Trend and a Sterling Business Opportunity

There’s no doubt about it: The practice of yoga is a fashionable trend. What’s more, it’s also a terrific business opportunity for a yogi with an entrepreneurial bent.

The demand is large and growing. A tool for weight loss as well as combating stress, this Indian discipline has billions of followers around the world. Many more know they want to use this ancient practice for spiritual, medicinal, and aesthetic reasons. They just need someone to teach them. Are you someone who can do that?

My Experience

A few years ago, I started a school for people who wanted to teach yoga. At that time, there were only a few such schools in my city. At first, there were only 15 to 20 people a year who wanted to be teachers. Today there are 70 people in my school.

In my experience, a school such as mine works better in residential areas than it does in urban centers. That’s because most people like to practice before or after leaving their places of work. Therefore, it is more practical for them to find a school that is close to their home.

The cost to a teacher for a one-hour class can vary widely, depending on the type of yoga they teach and the facilities they use. However, there are ways to defray the costs. For example, teachers naturally charge their students a fee to attend. They can also make a small profit by offering their clients quality yoga clothes they buy online.

By Prescription

Celebrities have helped to popularize this practice. As a matter of fact, it is expected to generate roughly $11.5 billion in the U.S. alone by the year 2020.

However, there is another driver for the regular practice of yoga. Medical professionals now recommended it for a variety of physical and emotional ailments. The medical profession understands that it can alleviate stress as well as muscle pain. They know it can help their patients to recover from surgery or other trauma.

Therefore, the demand for yoga studies and private teachers isn’t sensitive to economic cycles. That’s because the people who practice it feel that it helps them with their health. Therefore, it is an expense that they do not change, regardless of its price.

For One and All

People of all ages can learn and practice yoga. This includes pregnant women, children, and older adults. However, the average age of practitioners is between 30 and 40 years. While a good teacher will make modifications for pregnant women and people with disabilities, the overall risk of serious injury is low.

Is Yoga the Right Business for You?

If you’re already an active yogi, you may be well on your way to having your own yoga-related business. Once you have set your business up and have attracted some students into your practice, you’ll find that teaching classes is not your only income stream. You can also establish other income sources from selling clothing, DVDs, recorded mantras, retreats, and more.

In short, the only thing that will limit the expansion of your yoga business will be your imagination. So dust off your yoga mat and start your business today!
