3 Ways to Make Yourself More Valuable to Employers
While you’re working to get your business off the ground, you might need to work for others and build your business in your spare time. If that’s the case for you, you will want to make yourself more valuable to employers. Here, we discuss 3 ways to do that.
Sometimes it can feel as if your employer doesn’t recognize your efforts. However, the problem might not be the company. It could be you. As much of a bitter pill as that is to swallow, you do need to make an effort to improve yourself to make an employer notice you. You thereby help yourself and become more of an asset to the company you work for. Following are some tips to help you get ahead in your workplace.

1. Expand Your Skill Set
The more skills you have, the more valuable you become to your employer. You might think that your employer would feel that you’re more likely to job hunt if you have more skills than you need, but that’s not exactly true. An employee who can freely move from task to task helps to reduce gaps in production.
For example: You’re working on a construction site and operating one type of equipment. Someone who was working with different equipment on the project quits abruptly. You step in to fill the gap because you have the know-how that’s needed to properly operate that piece of equipment. The direct result is that the project keeps moving forward and no time is lost. An employer notices this kind of flexibility.
2. Build Your Network
The old saying of “toot your own horn” is the best way to get yourself noticed by your employer. You may find that it’s a bit off-putting to talk about yourself all the time, but it doesn’t have to be.
Start by getting to know the people you work with at all possible levels and converse with them regularly. When someone has a problem that they’re having a hard time with and you know you can fix it, you have an opening. This is your opportunity to show that you’ve got something to offer the company and are willing to step in whenever necessary. The more you do this, the more likely it will be that you will make yourself more valuable to employers. Someone will think of your name the next time they need help.
3. Be Reliable
Have you ever known someone who said they could do something, but then they flake out at the last minute? Don’t be that person. The person who raises their hand only to not perform does not impress anyone. It’s simple: When you say you’re going to do something, do it. If you say you’re going to show up, be there and be on time. That’s one of the key ways you will make yourself more valuable to employers.
You are part of a team when you work for someone. No one is an island working by themselves. Others rely on you and vice versa. When someone knows you are reliable and steady, you are far more likely to become valuable to your employer.
These are some of the ways you can bring attention to yourself and prove to your employer that you are worthy of a closer look. It takes work, and results aren’t always instantaneous. However, you will find that your employer puts more effort into your development as an employee when you do the same.
