How To Grow Your Business By Fostering A Teamwork Mentality

How To Grow Your Business By Fostering A Teamwork Mentality

Whatever the size of your business, at some point – provided the business is growing – you will need to begin the process of employing staff members. Obviously it is important that you hire the right people for the position, but equally as important is ensuring that from the very beginning you lay down the foundations for good teamwork. Getting things done requires team effort. A single staff member cannot achieve anything when he is made to work on projects alone, regardless of how talented he is. By harnessing each member’s skills and talents and gearing toward a specific goal, the company will be much more productive.

Team Building Activities

An excellent way to start your team bonding is to consider a team building day. Whenever you are planning these, you need to consider your staff and what would appeal to them. Not everyone, for instance, is going to appreciate a military assault course. Depending on the size of the team, you could take them on a sightseeing limousine tour, or maybe a wine-tasting day. The list of options is endless, but the point is that it will be a fun experience – away from the office where people can get to know each other better, away from the stress and strains of everyday work.

The Benefits Of Teamwork

There are many reasons why you will want to build a teamwork mentality, but here are a few to get you thinking:

  • Make Use Of The Different Experiences Within The Team – There are certain salespeople who can sell anything. However, if you have a brainstorming session, and the product being discussed is for toddlers and all of your sales team are 22-year-old single guys, their experience with toddlers is likely to be quite limited. If you also have people in the back office or marketing who already have a young family, it makes sense to include their knowledge and experience to the discussion. Once you build the team correctly, this kind of shared experience and advice will happen naturally, making all parties feel valued and increasing your bottom line.
  • Helps People To Focus On Their Individual Strengths – Different people will naturally gravitate to the things they prefer to do. Obviously, this is not always doable within a small team, but wherever possible, it makes perfect sense to make use of people and their strengths. If someone is highly creative, but rather disorganized, and another team member thrives on structure and deadlines, then it could make perfect sense to ask them both to work with each other. Obviously, you will need to monitor the situation to ensure that they don’t end up constantly arguing, rather they would be working together as a team and could both make use of their individual skill sets to hit the goal.
  • Conflict Resolution – Within every team, there is always the potential for conflict, but this provides more opportunity to grow and develop the team. Team members have to adapt and learn to work with each other. Provided that you and your management team keep a firm grip on the situation, these problems can be solved – and on many occasions, an even stronger bond can be formed.
  • Encourages Risks To Be Taken – When people are left to make their decisions, in most cases, they are less likely to take risks. They don’t want to shoulder the entire risk, and as a consequence, opportunities for your business may be missed. By empowering your staff to work as a team, those risks can be analyzed by a wider range of people, and potentially, emboldened decisions can be made as a team, which might have been missed if left to one individual.
  • You Will Naturally Identify Leaders – By watching how your team interacts, you will easily be able to see who has leadership potential and can then be nurtured and encouraged. Leadership cannot simply be from the top down, and it is important to try and develop leaders throughout the team.

The best way to grow and develop any business is to get everyone pulling in the same direction. By following the ideas above, and encouraging a close-knit team, you will embolden people, foster a positive attitude within the company, and potentially retain staff for a longer time because they enjoy being a part of your team.
